This organization is an incorporated 501(c)(3) organization and was first organized as a social club in 1953 as, The Counts Inc., with the original charter members, Willie Simmons, Leon Craft, Willie Primus, George Coleman, Fletcher Scott, and Roy Evans. In 1966, golfers Leon Craft, Charles Robinson, Dan Scurlock, Merrill Brown, Shelton Conerly and Jim Curtis were responsible for The Counts Inc., becoming, The Counts/Capital City Golf Club. In 1972 the name was changed to Sacramento Area Black Golf Club (SABGC).
We are dedicated to encouraging youth and teaching them the value of good sportsmanship; that includes the development of skills and techniques to advance in the game of golf. We were formed to recruit, organize, develop, support, and promote Junior golfers and Junior Golf Programs while promoting interest and enjoyment in the game of golf. ALL GOLFERS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN OUR ORGANIZATION as we aim to expand access to the game of golf for Black communities in the Sacramento and surrounding areas.
SABGC has been a long-time member of Western States Golf Association (WSGA), founded or formed in 1954 by a small group of Black golfers, to provide opportunity for participation in one of the world's most challenging and rewarding sports. WSGA has approximately 30 member clubs embracing the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and Washington with a total membership of 1400 golfers.
In 1999 SABGC affiliated with Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) to broaden our membership base, thus providing more membership options.
